Cookies from the baker

Before the train ride to the Capitol the baker, Peeta's father, gives Katniss some cookies. That she later throws out the train window.
"He pulls a white paper package from his jacket pocket and holds it out to me. I open it and find cookies. These are a luxury we can never afford."
It's not described what kind of cookies it is so but I think is sugar cookies.

Ingredients:
1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
A pinch of salt

Mix together flour, sugar, vanilla and salt. Crumble the butter in the flour mixture. Knead in the egg and put in the refrigerator for half an hour.
Shape the dough into small balls. Put the balls on a baking sheet and press them flat.
Bake the cookies in the oven at 356 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 min or until the edges are brown.
Let the cookies cool on a rack.

District 11 bread

This is my idea of the bread from District 11.
District 11 is like District 12 a poor District so there for I choose the sourdough as well.
The bread is described as crescent shaped and sprinkled with seed.

Sourdough:
Rye flour
Water

The first day you mix together 1 cup flour and 1 cup water and leave it on the kitchen table.
The next day you mix in and equal amount of rye and water in the sourdough. This part you continue with for 4-5 day or until the sourdough starts bobbles and has a sent of vinegar or beer.

Bread:
2,5 cups sourdough
3 cups temped water
9 1/3 cup rye flour
Sesame seeds

Dissolve the sourdough in the water.
Gradually add the flour.
Leave the dough a warm place to raise for 4-6 hours. Shape the dough into crescent shapes rolls brush with water and sprinkle with sesame seed.

Carrot soup

One of the courses Katniss and Peeta gets on the train on the way to the Capitol, to enter the Hunger Games.

The carrot soup is much more orange than the picture shows.

Ingredients:
9 carrots
1 onion
4 cloves garlic
1 red chili
2 teaspoon ginger
4 teaspoon coriander
Oil
3 cups vegetable bouillon
Salt and pepper

Peel the carrots. Chop the carrots, onion, garlic and chili. Put it in a pot with oil, ginger and coriander and saute.
Pour in the bouillon and let simmer for 30 min. or until the carrots are tender. Blend the soup until smooth. Taste with salt and pepper.
The soup has a consistency as puree, but if you wan it to be thinner you can add more bouillon and spices.

Bread from the Seam

The bread they make in the Seam is said to be grainy and dense. Distric 12 is a poor distric so it makes sense that the base in the bread is sourdough, sinces it's much cheaper than yeast and bakingpowder.

Sourdough:
Water
Whole wheat flour

Mix together 4 cups water and 4 cup whole wheat flour. Leave it a tempered place like the kitchen. The day after mix in one part water and one part whole weat flour. Continue for 4-6 days to the sourdough starts bobling and smels sour. If the sourdough smels roten then toss it and start over.
You can kikstart the sourdough by adding milk, yoghurt, honny or yeast.

Bread:
10 cups sourdough
12 cups water
9 1/3 cup flour (I used a mix of whole wheat flour and all-purpos flour)

Kned the ingredients together.
Leav the dough for 4-6 hours to rais. Every hour fold the sides to the center.
Form the bread and leav until the bread feels like foam.
Bake the bread at 437 degrees Fareneit.

Peeta's bread

This is the bread that I imaging Peeta throws Katnis when she is starving and sitting at a tree in the market after she tried to sell Prims baby clothes.
The bread is described as being more light than the bread they make in the Seam. Katnis describes the bread as a nut and raisin bread.

The first bread I made turned out just like the one Peeta throw Katnis, because it got a bit burnt.

Sourdough:
3/4 cup flour
1/4 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup tepid water
1/4 buttermilk
Yeast the size of a pea

Dissolve the yeast in the water. Combine the rest of the ingredients.
Put the sourdough in a small container and store it in the refrigerator for at least tow days.

Bread:
0,5 oz yeast
8 cup tepid water
Sourdough
2 tablespoon syrup
2 teaspoon salt
1 cup + 3/4 cup sifting
1 cup raisin
1 cup nuts

Dissolve the yeast in the water. Mix in the syrup, sourdough and salt. Add flour, raisin and nuts little by little.
Knead the dough together for about 10 min. Leave the dough for 30 min.
Form the bread and leave to rest for 3 hours, in a warm place.
Bake the bread in a 432 degree Fahrenheit oven for 30 min.
